One leaking joint is a repair, and a burst flooding the hall right now is an emergency; those have their own pages for burst pipe repairs and hidden leaks. Repiping is for the day patching stops paying for itself.

Galvanised and Early Copper Pipes in Older Homes

Patch a pipe that is sound and leaking once; replace it when the leaks keep coming, the water turns rust-coloured, or the flow fades at many taps together. Two old materials sit behind those signs: galvanised steel, and copper assembled with lead-based solder.

Galvanised steel is steel pipe wearing a zinc coating, and it rots from the inside out. That corrosion brings leaks, discoloured water and a bore that narrows until the flow chokes. Lead-based solder joined brass fittings and copper lines across Australia until 1989, so any home plumbed before then deserves a look at what its pipes are made of.

The villas up on Hillside Crescent received galvanised iron when they were built, and a renovation regularly uncovers runs nobody has clapped eyes on for decades. At the last census, separate houses numbered just 894 out of 4,174 homes, so this pipe is a small and ageing slice of what we see. It is also the oldest supply pipe on our run.

Weak flow everywhere in the house, rather than at one tap, points to a narrowed bore. Other causes of low pressure sit on our water pipe repairs page.

Paperwork After a Repipe in Queensland

A repipe in an existing home is classed as notifiable work in Queensland. The licensed plumber who does it gives the QBCC a Form 4 inside ten business days, and you get a copy for your records. No permit from council applies, and no inspection is compulsory.

Your rights extend beyond that copy. The QBCC will provide the Form 4 if you never received one, even after lodgement.

You can also contact the council at any stage of the work and request an inspection. For twelve months after the completion notice lands with the QBCC, an inspector may view the job, with your consent, to confirm it satisfies the code.

Two cases sit outside this category. A build from scratch is permit work, which is a different job entirely. And in a unit or apartment, some renovations tip over into permit territory, so raise it with the plumber first.

What Replaces Galvanised and Old Copper Pipe

The two usual replacements are copper and cross-linked polyethylene (PEX). Where the pipe runs decides which one we use. Copper is the rigid metal choice; PEX is the flexible plastic one that bends around framing and tight subfloor gaps.

Every product we install must come from the Act's approved list for plumbing, and the finished work must satisfy the code requirements. We make no lifespan claims for either material, because the install quality and the water conditions decide how the job ages.

The Regulation draws a line that matters here. A supply pipe carries water within your premises, and the connection point marks the boundary where Urban Utilities' mains end and your pipework begins. A repipe stays on your side; the mains belong to the utility.

What to Expect While Pipes Are Replaced

  1. 1

    Inspection comes first

We check what is there and decide which pipes to swap and which can stay. Age, material and the condition we actually see decide it, not a blanket rule.

  2. 2

    Planning and access

We map the new line and how it reaches every fixture, and we open access to the pipe behind walls and under floors. The plan sets the staging and the quote.

  3. 3

    Building the new line

The fresh line goes in next to the existing one, so you keep water while we work. We shut the supply off only for the final connections.

  4. 4

    Testing before close-up

Once everything is joined, we pressure-test the new pipework for leaks before closing anything up. The Form 4 goes to the QBCC after completion.

Repiping Questions From Older Homes

Call (07) 3523 6484

What does repiping a house involve in Hamilton?

The work follows a set order: inspect the old pipes, plan the replacement, build the new line, connect it, then test for leaks. We open access behind walls and under floors where the pipe runs. Urban Utilities' mains stay untouched, because the work is all on your side of the connection point.

How do I know if my water pipes need replacing?

Three signs point to pipe that is worn out: repeated leaks along the same run, rusty or brown water, and flow that drops at multiple taps together. Galvanised steel, or copper with lead solder from before 1989, is the usual suspect in older homes. We inspect to confirm.

Does repiping a house need a permit in Queensland?

No, a permit from council is not required when the building already exists. The job is notifiable work, so the plumber reports it to the QBCC on a Form 4, inside ten business days, and you receive a copy. Unit owners should raise the category with the plumber first.

How long does repiping take in Hamilton?

No fixed duration applies. What drives it is the home's size, the fixture count, the pipe length, the access, and whether we stage the sections. The quote sets out the scope first, and Urban Utilities' supply is only interrupted for the final connections.

What affects the cost of repiping a Hamilton house?

Two factors outweigh the rest: how much pipe the job runs, and the count of fixtures to hook back up. How easily we reach the pipe, through walls, floors or the subfloor, shapes the labour too. The fixed quote confirms the price before work begins.
