At the last census, seven in ten homes here were flats or apartments, so stacked bathrooms with mixers hidden behind tiles make up much of our shower work. Our bathroom plumbing page maps the full range of wet-area jobs we take on.

Why Showers Drip, Run Cold or Lose Flow
A drip that persists with the water off, water that never gets warm, and weak or uneven shower flow are the three faults behind most shower call-outs. Each points to a different part, and the pattern tells us where to look before we open anything.
A drip that carries on after you shut the shower down comes from the mixer, where an aged washer or its cartridge lets water slip past the seal. A little water left in the head after your shower is nothing to worry about, and our dripping shower head guide explains the difference.
Weak or patchy flow usually has three causes on the fitting side:
- scale packed into the spray holes in the head
- a restrictor built into the head
- a cartridge so worn it chokes the passageway
Lukewarm water points to the cartridge too. The cartridge sets the flow rate and the mix of hot and cold, so a worn one can overdo the cold side of the blend. If no hot tap in the place delivers hot water, the water heater is the place to look.
Water getting through the tiles or pooling outside the recess is a different fault again, and our leaking shower repairs page covers that work.

When a Shower Repair Becomes a Replacement
A repair cures a worn washer or cartridge, while a replacement suits a shower worn past that point or an outlet that needs to move. A handle that grinds but still seals, or a drip that a cartridge swap fixes, stays a repair.
A few rules frame the replacement:
- A licensed plumber cannot legally install a shower fitting unless it carries WaterMark certification, the approval mark for fittings used in Australian plumbing.
- Fixtures like taps and showers, plus flow controllers, also need registration under the national water-efficiency labelling scheme (WELS), the stars on the label.
- A 3-star minimum applies to showerheads in new dwellings; renovations are exempt from that floor.
- Queensland tenancy rules say a rental showerhead flows at 9 litres a minute or under before a landlord can charge a tenant for the whole water account.
Putting in a new shower outlet, or moving the shower somewhere else, counts as notifiable work in an existing building. A licensed plumber does it without a permit from council, and has 10 business days to lodge a Form 4, the compliance certificate filed with the QBCC, after finishing.

From the Shower Head Back to the Wall
The parts run from the outlet back to the wall: the head, then the arm or the rail, then the hose, then the mixer. Knowing which is which keeps the repair small, because the head and arm sit in plain reach while a mixer inside the wall takes an opening cut to get at.
The head
sprays the water out, and any householder can fit a new one.
The arm
runs water from the wall across to a fixed head.
The rail
carries a handheld head on its hose, which draws from the outlet in the wall.
The mixer and cartridge
set the flow and the temperature blend together.
The diverter
where the shower sits over a bath, it routes water to the head or the spout; water still pouring from the spout while you shower means it is worn and needs replacing.
Area-level figures put population growth at 7.9 per cent over five years, with 85 dwellings approved in that stretch. The stock therefore ranges from century-old tapware in the hill villas to fittings only a few years old in the Northshore towers. The repair differs accordingly: an exposed arm on a villa is a quick swap, while a mixer behind tiled walls in a tower flat takes more care to reach.

Where a Shower Head Swap Ends and Plumbing Begins
Yes, you can change the shower head yourself; the arm, the mixer and its cartridge are licensed-only work. The QBCC treats a head change as unregulated work, but the result still needs to comply with the standards.
Everything behind the head carries a licence line:
Repairing or replacing a fitting
like the shower arm, the mixer or its cartridge is minor work: a licensee does it, without a council permit and without a Form 4.
A new outlet, or a shower moved somewhere else,
is notifiable work: the licensed contractor lodges the Form 4, pays its fee, and can pass that cost plus admin on to you.

Shower Repair Questions From Hamilton Homes
Call (07) 3523 6484Can a plumber fix my shower in Hamilton?
Yes, we repair every fitting: the head, the arm or rail, the hose, the mixer and its cartridge. Water getting out of the shower recess onto floors or walls is a separate job, and we cover that work separately on this site.
Why does my shower head drip when the water is turned off?
The mixer is the likely culprit. A drip that persists once everything is shut down means the washer or the cartridge inside the wall mixer is letting water slip past its seal. The head itself is usually fine, and fitting a new one will not stop the drip.
What causes low shower pressure in Hamilton?
Mineral build-up clogging the spray plate, a flow limiter inside the head, or a tired cartridge chokes the water at the fitting itself. Weak flow at every tap in the place points to a supply problem instead, which needs a different diagnosis.
Who fixes a shower mixer in a Hamilton unit?
A licensed plumber does the repair. Pipes serving one lot only, inside that lot's boundary, fall to the lot owner. The shower tray falls to the owner or occupier even when it sits outside the lot's boundary in a community titles scheme.
When should I replace a shower instead of repairing it?
Swap the whole unit once wear has gone beyond what washers or a cartridge can cure, or once the outlet needs to go somewhere new. A parts refresh stays a repair; shifting the shower makes the job notifiable.
